Age, like fine red wine

makes us learn lessons to hold

in our memories.

Try, fail, start again

I wish I had known that then

I was too frightened.

Look in my blue eyes

they store the secrets of life

ask, I will tell you.

  1. I wish it were true that “age…makes us learn lessons.” Unfortunately, I have known some foolish old people in my time. It takes age plus something else—introspection, perhaps—to make a person truly wise. Age alone won’t do it.
