I was watching “Good Morning America” the other day when a cancer patient met the person who gave her bone marrow to save her life. I have always wanted to sign up to volunteer to give my bone marrow for a very sick person but I never really knew how. I thought it was very expensive and incredibly painful; I was wrong.
I signed up this morning and I hope many more people will do the same. I’ve been an organ donor for years ever since my father- in- law had a liver transplant 27 years ago. Without his liver transplant he would never have been able to see us get married or know the two precious grandchildren he has, now 18 and 19. At 87 he plays tennis daily, goes to museums, shows, lectures etc. He is the oldest living liver transplant recipient; how could I not want to donate my organs witnessing this miracle? It’s officially on my driver’s license now.
Robin Roberts is having a bone marrow transplant soon with the help of her sister. She showed me the way to sign up. It’s easy, it doesn’t cost a thing and the first step is to go to WABC’s website and fill out a questionnaire. I haven’t gotten my kit yet but they send you four cotton swabs, you swab your cheek and return it to them. Easy.
I am not a big fan of pain, I am a chronic pain sufferer with Fibromyalgia and an auto-immune disease, Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, I understand pain. But, I would be happy to have a little more pain to save someone’s life; that I know for sure.
Research it, read about it and then please consider signing up, wouldn’t you like to be the reason a child, a mother, any person, lived?

I was a blood donor (I’m a sought after type) but haven’t been able to give due to meds. Have to check again as some meds have changed and might be allowed. I was going to go the next step and I believe it was platlets. I wonder if meds effect bone marrrow? I should check that. I’m down as an organ donor.

there is a quiz and since i have an autoimmune disease they took note of it but said i could do the swabs anyway. it’s worth a try, I figure.

Good for you!!! I am an organ donor, and a Temporal Bone Donor. (they are researching Meniere’s and other vestibular system disorders)
I can’t be a bone marrow donor because I had bone cancer survivor (caught early).
Cancer free for 34 years.
So….Horay for people like you!!!

and hooray for people like YOU! they asked if I had an autoimmune disease and I said yes, they then asked it it was hashimoto’s or graves and i said yes to hashimoto’s. they said other than that are u in good health i said yes, but t hey didn’t ask about fibro. i will send it in and it’s up to them. i would gladly do it.

Hey big sis….awesum blog! Im a registerd organ donor…but cant giv blood due to my clotting disease..so i wonder if that is the same for marrow? Hmm…at any rate…vry good for evryone to consider!
